About two-thirds of the phosphorus in plant seeds, such as grains and soybeans, exist in the form of phytic acid phosphorus. Since the digestive tracts of monogastric animals like poultry and pigs lack phytase, they can only utilize phytic acid phosphorus to a limited extent, resulting in low digestibility of phosphorus from plant-based feeds in these animals. The use of phytase can improve the digestibility and utilization of phosphorus, reduce the amount of mineral phosphorus in feed, and decrease the amount of phosphorus discharged into soil and surface water. This effectively reduces water eutrophication problems. Trials have shown that it can reduce phosphorus excretion in pig and poultry feces by about 30%.

The three main features of BASF's Natuphos® E
1. Excellent tolerance to digestive enzymes in the animal intestine, perfectly adapting to various pH environments
The release of phytate phosphorus primarily occurs in the upper digestive tract of pigs and poultry. The physiological pH of this location is about 2.0 to 5.5. Figure 2 clearly shows that Natuphos can still maintain its maximum activity perfectly even under such pH conditions.
Natuphos® E exhibits exceptionally high tolerance to pepsin - the primary protein-degrading enzyme in the stomachs of monogastric animals (see Figure 3). These two features enable it to efficiently break down the anti-nutritional phytates present in the digestive tract from the very beginning, thereby allowing animals to absorb as much of the nutrients released from phytates.
2. Maximizing digestibility and animal performance will notably reduce feed costs.
Natuphos® E maximizes the release of phosphorus from phytates in feed, making it easily digestible and absorbable by pigs and poultry.
Multiple feeding trials from all relevant species have clearly validated and quantified the ability of Natuphos® E to efficiently release minerals and amino acids from phytates, while its capacity to greatly increase the energy value of feed. The significant improvement in energy and nutrient utilization, while maintaining the same performance parameters as standard feed without Natuphos® E, the greatly improved utilization of energy and nutrients also means that it has an unrivalled advantage in reducing feed costs.
3. Launching new sustainability standards
Natuphos® E greatly promotes animal growth, launching new sustainability standards for livestock production. BASF's phytase products improve resource utilization with unparalleled excellence, minimizing environmental impact while reducing the demand for raw materials such as minerals.
These gains are due to improved digestibility of phosphorus. (Depending on the feed) Animal growth requirements can be met with no or reduced supplementation of mineral phosphorus. The release of phosphorus, protein, amino acids, and energy can improve feed conversion and reduce phosphorus excretion. Natuphos® E thus further contributes to production sustainability, proving the guiding principle of effective resource protection and utilization.
